The Origin of the Panthère: More than Just an Animal
The Panthère story at Cartier begins in 1914, when Louis Cartier commissioned the illustrator George Barbier to create a sketch titled “La Dame à la Panthère”. This image marked the birth of the maison’s most powerful icon: the panther as a symbol of independence, elegance and female strength.
It was Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s creative director, nicknamed “La Panthère”, who transformed the feline into a definitive emblem of the brand. Throughout the 20th century, the panther motif appeared in watches, brooches, necklaces and high jewellery timepieces, always with a daring, sensual and refined aesthetic.
In this context, the Cartier Panthère Dentelle was born: a modern reinterpretation blending the delicacy of lace (dentelle in French) with the ferocity of the feline design, all set in diamonds and white gold. It is a creation that plays with negative space and volume, like embroidery sculpted in light—designed only for the boldest women.
